Does Pumpkin Pie Count?

It has been a while since I posted so I thought I should update my on going goals that I have already started.

#31- Eating Fresh Fruit

I have actually been pretty good about this. Up until the last 2 days that is. I have had pumpkin pie those days though, does that count? (I looked it up on wikipedia and it is actually classified as a fruit.) 🙂

That brings us to #46- Make one new recipe a month
I made pumpkin pie for the first time for Thanksgiving this year. My brother and I are the only ones that like it, so my mom stopped making it years ago and had store bought or no at all for many years. This year I decided to make it. It was pretty easy, especially withmy wonderful sous chef Abby, and very yummy. I made Martha Stewart’s pumpkin pie recipe.

Here is a pic of Abby helping make the pie.

Here is a piece of the pie.

I have also made 4 other new recipes this month. Which leads me to the conclusion I need to change that goal. I realized making one new recipe a month is not a challenge for me, it is something I usually do. So, I am changing it to 3 recipes a month.
Other new recipes I have made this month.
Chicken Tikka Masala
Chicken and Dumplings
Beef Stroganoff

Brussel Sprout Gratin (for Thanksgiving, it did not turn out so great. ) 😦
Plus, I still have one more new recipe on my meal planning list that I have not made yet.

#27- meal planning
I have done pretty well at sticking to my meal plan. I have strayed from it twice. I just was not in the mood for anything on the list. Like tonight with it so cold and dreary I really wanted something warm and hearty so I made chicken and dumplings instead of the rosemary chicken. I did NOT have to go to the store for the things I subbed in though, which was the point of meal planning.

#29 Abby’s Blog

I have done really good at keeping up with Abby’s Blog so far. My goal was a minimum of once a month and I have already made 2 more posts since starting earlier this month. Yay me!

Meal Planning and Eating Better, #27 and #31

Thanksgiving Dinner at mom’s house, YAY!

#31- eat fresh fruit everyday for one month

I started on my plan to eat at lest 1 piece of fresh fruit everyday. I do not know why this is so hard I keep lots of fresh fruit in the house for Abby. For some reason I do not eat it though. I have been doing it for 4 days now, and I am 4/4.

Books and Blogging, #19 & #29

#19 Read at least 35 books

Finished one of my 35 books to read. I finished A Thousand Splendid Suns last night.

book jacket

I was really looking forward to it since I enjoyed The Kite Runner so much, but I had heard it was not good. I have to disagree, I loved it. It might be partly because I could relate better from a woman and mom’s point of view. I am not the kind of person that cries at movies or books, etc. but I was balling like a baby at parts of this book. As in the Kite Runner I enjoyed learning about a part of the world I do not know much about, but the character’s storylines are what drag you in and keep you. Read It!

*I know some of the other 101ers have book list, so I will let you in on something I just found this weekend. (I am sure I am the last to know though, and you will all be saying, “I know that.”) I found CHEAP books on overstock.com, and they had almost every single book on my list. They are mostly about 40% off the publishers price, adn shipping is only $3. WooHoo!

#29- Start Abby’s blog back up

I worked on Abby’s blog with all of my free time today. I originally set it up last Septmeber, this was the third post, how sad. I hope having it on my list will keep me on top of keeping it up.

New Experiences- #88 in progress

We took Abby to the Wurstfest for the first time last weekend. We all had so much fun, I had not been in years. I forgot how much I enjoy it. (and of course the FOOD!)

Ok, so I am going to cheat a little. I won’t count it but… Last month we took Abby to the Maker’s Fair. She made and flew a kite for the first time. It was so cute, she LOVED flying her kite.

One Day Late- #2

Abby's B-day thank you card

It is a day late, but I finished #2. I made Abby’s thank you cards today.

My first failure! :( , #2

Number 2 on my list is make Abby’s B-day thank you cards by today. Well, I have not even started on them yet. I am off tomorrow, so hopefully I will get them done.

#18 done, #6 started

#18- Make a list of 20 books to read, at least 5 being non-fiction and 5 “classics”

Well, I finished my book list. I plan on reading more books, my goal is actually 30, but I left room for book club and guilty pleasure books. Here is my list. Please do not laugh at my classics selection, most of you are probably saying “I can’t believe she has never read that.” I was not much of a reader up until the past 5 years or so.

Non- Fiction
The Tipping Point
The Devil in the White City
The Glass Castle
Into the Wild
The Nine
Reading Lolita in Tehran

  • Classics
    Moby Dick
    Of Mice and Men
    Don Quito
    Paradise Lost
    A Thousand Splendid Suns(in progress)
    Secret Life of Bees
    The Memory Keeper’s Daughter
I know This Much is True
    Flowers for Algernon
    The Book Thief
Love in the Time of Cholera
1 Stephen King book of DH’s choice

#3- Start a Journal of “The Best Thing Today”

I started my journal last night. I will not be keeping it on here, but I thought I would share the experience of my first entry.

Abby and I had a really rough day. She was very whiny and cranky all day and to be honest was driving me crazy. It did not help that DH worked late and did not get home until just before Abby’s bedtime. I decided since it was such a bad day that it was a good idea to start my journal and try to pick out something good for the day. Well, I honestly though that “Abby went to bed” was going to be my journal entry. I know that sounds horrible, but it is true. Dh got home just as I was putting Abby’s pjs on her. He said “I will put her to bed.” Great, I will go have a glass of wine! As I took Abby out of DH’s arms to say goodnight to her she gave me a big kiss and said “love you.” OMG, my heart melted. She has only said this one other time, without me saying to her first, so it was pretty special. I think she knew mommy needed it! 🙂 So, ofcourse this was my journal entry:

Abby said “love you”(without me saying it first) as she was saying goodnight after a long and hard day. I think she knew mommy needed it!

  • #28 done

Well, tonight I put up a list on the side of the fridge for us to write down our grocery needs. Now, lets see if we use it. 🙂

    #1 and #52 down!

#1- I completed my list on Saturday, 11/03, I just now found the time to make a blog and post it though. I realized I should have made setting up the blog a goal. 🙂

#52- As I was finishing up my list on Saturday, I made one of the goals to make an Indian meal complete with naan, which honestly is one of my favorites parts of an Indian meal. I have always been very intimidated with the thought of cooking Indian cusine. But, I decided to just go for it that night. The nann was truely a big deal for me, I am NOT a baker. But, I did it. I was pretty impresses with myself. I made Chicken Tikka Masala, basamati rice and naan. Of course I got so involved with the chicken and nann I forgot to make the rice. Brilliant! The meal was delayed 30 min, but I still did it and I have to say it was pretty good. I completely forgot to take pictures. I will be making it again though, so I will take pics next time.

    Ok, I’m In!

Some of the ladies on a board I frequent, theNest, started participating in 101 in 1001 Project. I thought it sounded like a great idea, and possiblily could help me with meeting some of my goals, big and small. So, here it is!

    Here are the dets:

    The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

    The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

    Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past – frequently simple goals such as New Year’s resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organizing and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.
